NY Eastside Aikikai Logo & Brand

Differentiating a martial arts dojo in a niche market

THE TEAM & PROJECT LENGTH /

Freelance Designer 👋. 1 month.

BACKGROUND /

The New York Eastside Aikikai (NYEA) is not to be confused by New York Aikikai (NYA), founded and headed by Yoshimitsu Yamada-sensei. While NYEA is affiliated with NYA, it supports its own group of students (including myself) with open arms. Compared to other martial arts like taekwondo, muay thai, and Brazilian jijutsu, aikido is fairly unknown.

The new branding aims to differentiate from NYA. Graphic elements and color evoke energy and dynamism.

the concept /

The concept heavily depends on the metaphor of the Novarts orange-red droplet as the cure or medicine. In the drawing room, at first, we were challenged with the timing of the metaphor.

Knowing the average attention span of a user, the connection needed to be clear upfront—the title page. With a full-bleed view inside a vial of medicine, you can see the droplets that would be used throughout the journey.
